Gene Smith: Managing the Buckeyes Athletic Department (website test)

Gene Smith is in his 14th year as Director of Athletics at The Ohio State University. He is widely recognized and lauded among the leaders of his profession, and Smith has been named "one of the most powerful people in collegiate sport".

Smith oversees the nation's most comprehensive, and one of the most successful collegiate athletic programs in the world. By way of example, a recent Wall Street Journal article ranked OSU football as the most valuable college football program in the country, coming in at just over $1.5 billion. This is up an impressive 59% over last year's #1 ranking.

But there's more to his success than just football. The athletics department manages 36 fully-funded varsity sports with more than 1,000 student-athletes. Under Smith's leadership graduation rates increased to 75% (from 65% in previous years), funding to other university programs has reached $39 million (fiscal 2015-16), and a Forbes article recognized the OSU athletics department as one of the 10 best organizations to work for in sports.
